The Sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa) a perennial, has its origins in Tropical Africa; also called Florida Cranberry. The calyx of the Sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is a used to make a Christmas beverage here in Trinidad and Tobago. The calyx is burgandy coloured and the drink also is that colour. Around November (sometimes late October) sorrel is sold in the market. There has been recent research where the Sorrel is being investigated as a cure for some forms of cancer.

Sorell Kills Cancer Cells
We draw it, we dry it, we drink it and have even made chutney from it.
Now sorrel, Jamaica's favourite Christmas beverage could be in for bigger things.
Research at Northern Caribbean University (NCU) in Mandeville shows that sorrel, which is grown in three varieties in Jamaica, could be a treatment or cure for certain types of cancer.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Politics of Trinidad and Tobago takes place in a framework of a unitary state, with a parliamentary democracy modelled on that of the UK, from which it gained independence in 1962. Under the 1976 republican Constitution, the British monarch was replaced as head of state by a President chosen by an electoral college composed of the members of the bicameral Parliament, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The general direction and control of the government rests with the Cabinet, led by a Prime Minister. The Prime Minister and Cabinet are answerable (at least in theory) to the House of Representatives.

Monday, November 5, 2007

The possibility of sweeping constitutional changes that would turn Trinidad and Tobago's government into a U.S.-style presidency is at stake as voters began casting ballots at 6 a.m. Monday in a national election.

The governing People's National Movement, or PNM, held 20 of 36 seats in the oil-rich Caribbean country's previous Parliament and is likely to be re-elected with a comfortable majority, unless the two main opposition parties can avoid vote-splitting.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning is hoping to gain a special majority of at least 28 seats in Parliament — which, after boundary changes, now has 41 seats — to introduce constitutional amendments that will establish an executive presidency.

Hurricane Warning

***** Location: Trinidad and Tobago, Caribbean. Other areas
***** Season: Rainy or Wet Season
..... Summer in cold climates
***** Category: Humanity

*****************************
Explanation

Warnings and watches
are two levels of alert issued by national weather forecasting bodies to coastal areas threatened by the imminent approach of a tropical cyclone of tropical storm or hurricane intensity. They are notices to the local population and civil authorities to make appropriate preparation for the cyclone, including evacuation of vulnerable areas where necessary.
It is important that interests throughout the area of an alert make preparations to protect life and property, and do not disregard it on the strength of the detailed forecast track. Tropical cyclones are not points, and forecasting their track remains an uncertain science.

Caladium (Elephant Ears)

[ . BACK to WORLDKIGO . TOP . ]
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Caladium (Elephant Ears)

***** Location: Tropical Areas, Trinidad and Tobago
***** Season: Tropical Rainy Season
***** Category: Plant

*****************************
Explanation

http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/consumer/poison/Caladsp.htm

The Caladium or Elephant Ears,
left to thrive naturally, will appear as if by magic out of the soil; throwing up large heartshaped decorative leaves, on thin langly succulent stalks; around the last week of May; making the statement Rainy season - is - a - coming.
The leaves range from bright pink and green, to red and green, and toning down into the range-- white and green.

They love the rain and can grow and flourish into leaf sizes of about thirty seven by thirty two centimeters (37x32cm). Around late July early August they blossom a sort of lily which looks very much like the bloom of the Chinese Evergreen (Aglonema commutatum).

Late September they start drying out, the root will remain in the soil until next May. When they start their beautiful magic all over again.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Mass plantings of caladiums create a focal point in the landscape. They provide a striking contrast with the green foliage of other plants, especially when planted in the foreground.
Caladiums need protection from full sun for best growth and color. Some newer varieties will tolerate full sun for a couple of hours daily, but all prefer dappled or moderate shade.
http://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheets/HGIC1160.htm

It is also a poisonous plant:
TOXIC ONLY IF LARGE QUANTITIES EATEN. CAUSES SEVERE PAIN IN THE MOUTH IF EATEN! SKIN IRRITATION MINOR, OR LASTING ONLY FOR A FEW MINUTES.
